Sitla Bonoo co-founded the women's newspaper Ashanti in 1980. She came to the Netherlands as a teenager, where she graduated from The Hague Social Academy. In the late 1990s, alongside her work and motherhood, she earned her law degree from Leiden University.
In the 1980s, Bonoo worked as an emancipation worker in The Hague's Surinamese social services. There, she gained firsthand insight into the challenges and experiences of women within the Surinamese migration flow to the Netherlands. Through her involvement with Ashanti, she, along with others, contributed to amplifying and raising the visibility of the voices of Black women during the second wave of feminism.
She is currently active at the Sarnami House, including as a columnist.
